Where is Upper Teesdale?

The Tees is one of the major rivers in the North of England. It rises on Cross Fell in the North Pennines, and flows 137km to the North Sea between Redcar and Hartlepool.

Upper Teesdale is in County Durham and covers the broad valley of the River Tees in the North Pennines down to where the Balder tributary joins the Tees. The area includes Moor House-Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve and the waterfalls of Cauldron Snout, High Force and Low Force.

The construction of Cow Green Reservoir, between 1967 and 1971, led to a controlling of the river flow but spates still occur.
